ECI nets Rs 4,650 crores ahead of polls, highest-ever seizure

• ECI achieves highest-ever seizure of over Rs 4,650 crores ahead of polls 
• The amount surpasses record of Rs 3,475 crores in 2019
•  A seizure of Rs 100 crore was reported each day since March 1

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is gearing up for a historic feat in its fight against money power during the ongoing 2024 general elections. Enforcement agencies have reported an unprecedented seizure of over Rs 4,650 crores, marking the highest ever recorded in the 75-year history of Lok Sabha elections in India. This significant achievement comes even before the commencement of the first phase of polling for the 18th Lok Sabha elections on Friday.

This marks a sharp increase over Rs 3,475 crores seized during the entire Lok Sabha election in 2019. Significantly, 45% of the seizures are of drugs and narcotics, that are under the special focus of the Commission.

“With general elections 2024 underway, ECI is on track for the highest-ever seizures of inducements recorded in the 75-year history of Lok Sabha elections in the country," it said in an official statement. 

The EC stated that Rs100 crore seizure was made each day since March 1 this year.
